I have come to appreciate the importance of this question. Anyone considering visiting or worshipping with a congregation needs to be able to gauge the church. They need to know "Who they are" and "What are they about?" I have put much thought and prayer into these statements and I hope they give you a good understanding of what we are striving to accomplish as the Lord's church.
We are seeking to be the family of God. This means that we are warm, loving, family oriented, and real. Flawed at times, downright broken sometimes, but real. We are not deluded into thinking we are perfect nor do we expect perfection from each other. Romans 3:23 reminds us that we are all sinful and that helps us be patient and loving with each other. This desire to be genuine and transparent with each other has helped us grow in our support and love for each other. It has helped us be more in line with what the Bible teaches. Our desire is to be the family of God, brothers and sisters, working together to make this life as good as it can possibly be for each of us.
We are seeking Christ-likeness. This desire drives us to seek Jesus, to seek His love and grace, every day of our life here. We want more than just knowing about Him, we want to draw closer to Him, to know Him in such a real and powerful way that it transforms our lives and hearts. We know that God wants us to be transformed into the very image of His Son (Rom. 8:29) but we also understand that it is a process that takes time. We understand that like Paul we have not yet arrived at such a noble destination but, praise God, we are on our journey, walking toward Him more each day (Phil. 3:12-17).
We are seeking pure New Testament Christianity. We are a church that wants to go back to the Bible and be like the church we read about. In a world that is littered with various groups all claiming to be right, we have to conclude that everyone cannot be right. This prevalent confusion and division will lead many to discount Christianity as a viable option for their life and to reject Jesus Christ. We want to correct that. We want to be a beacon of hope to those who are seeking an anchor in this world to help them safely reach the other shore. We are seeking to just be Christians, to just follow the Bible, and to practice our faith as simply as possible. We don’t need all the attractions the world deems necessary to attract the lost. We simply need the pure word of God and pure New Testament Christianity.
This is who we are and what we are trying to accomplish here at Central Haywood church of Christ. I hope you will consider us as your church home whether its for a vacation, a quick weekend visit, or for many years to come.
